Plot:
The episode begins some time prior to the series. A younger Chuck meets Jimmy in Cook County Jail, where Jimmy has been imprisoned for unspecified offenses which risk having him labelled as a sex offender. Chuck warns Jimmy that his life will be ruined if the charges go through, and Jimmy pleads with Chuck to help get the charges against him dismissed. Chuck agrees to represent Jimmy under the condition that he cleans up his act.

In the present, Jimmy is anxious about Nacho's plot to extort the Kettlemans. He calls Kim Wexler, an acquaintance of his who works at Chuck's former law firm, which is providing legal counsel to the Kettlemans. Jimmy indirectly warns Kim about the potential danger to the Kettlemans, but then breaks off the call, insisting that he "is no hero." Later that night, Jimmy leaves an anonymous tip to the Kettlemans warning them that they are in danger. Concerned, the Kettlemans look outside their house and see somebody in a parked van watching them.

The next morning, after badgering a prosecutor into accepting a plea deal, Jimmy receives news from Kim that something has happened to the Kettlemans. He rushes to their house to find it surrounded by police, and finds out the Kettlemans, including their two children, are missing. Believing that Nacho has kidnapped them, Jimmy uses Nacho's contact number but only receives a voicemail. However, while waiting for Nacho's reply, Jimmy is picked up by the police, who tell him that they had arrested Nacho on suspicion of kidnapping the Kettlemans, and he had requested Jimmy as his legal counsel.

At the police station, Nacho admits that he had performed surveillance on the Kettlemans but denies kidnapping them. Nacho warns Jimmy that if he does not get the charges dropped, the police might uncover his connections to Tuco, which would result in Jimmy's death. Jimmy unsuccessfully tries to plead Nacho's case to the cops. Jimmy convinces Kim to take him to the Kettleman house to investigate the crime scene. Jimmy notices some inconsistencies, such as a missing child's doll, and theorizes that the Kettlemans staged their kidnapping. Jimmy privately admits to Kim that he warned the Kettlemans about Nacho and probably drove them into hiding.

Upon returning to the courthouse, Jimmy starts a fight with Mike, who effortlessly subdues him. The police ask Mike to press assault charges against Jimmy so that they can leverage him to testify against Nacho. Surprisingly, Mike takes Jimmy's side and refuses to press charges, as he believes his theory about the Kettlemans' disappearance is correct. Mike recounts a similar case he investigated as a Philadelphia police officer, where a suspect faked his disappearance. Mike tells Jimmy that the Kettlemans should still be hiding somewhere in the area. With the new lead, Jimmy explores the forest near the Kettleman home and finds their campsite. Jimmy confronts the Kettlemans and gets into a struggle, inadvertently discovering the stolen money.

Better Call Saul has hit the ground running and already become one of the best shows on TV – even if it’s not on TV in the traditional sense. A worthy prequel to Breaking Bad. Perhaps lightning can strike twice in the same place after all-
Roth Cornet of IGN gave the episode 8.5 out of 10, saying "Better Call Saul continues to settle into itself, as Jimmy McGill's will to do the right thing is tested." Richard Vine of The Guardian also gave a positive review, and was pleased that the episode began to examine Jimmy's relationships with Chuck and Kim, who "you really get the sense that she’s fond of him, against her better judgement" Wikipedia

PLOT: The episode begins some time in the past, as Jimmy and an unidentified companion leave a bar. In an alley, they discover a barely conscious drunk man. Jimmy takes the man's Rolex watch and estimates it is worth more than his wallet, leading his companion to give him his remaining money in exchange for the watch. After the companion takes off, it is revealed that the whole incident was a scam organized by Jimmy and the "unconscious" man. The two then return to Jimmy's residence and congratulate each other.

In the present, the Kettlemans offer Jimmy a bribe if he does not reveal they stole the $1,600,000. Jimmy instead gives them the option of them hiring him as their lawyer, but the Kettlemans refuse. The next day, Jimmy thanks Mike for his assistance in solving the predicament. After Nacho is released from police custody, he accuses Jimmy of warning the Kettlemans and says he will face "consequences." Jimmy rebuts by implying that he warned the family for the children's sake, and that given Nacho's sloppiness he should be grateful for any warning as it saved him.

Back at his office at the salon, it is revealed that Jimmy took the Kettlemans' bribe. Jimmy calculates his fees that can be paid off with the bribe and spends the remaining money on a makeover and billboard advertisement which shares obvious and deliberate similarities with Chuck's law firm, Hamlin Hamlin & McGill, presumably out of spite. Kim confronts Jimmy over the imitation, and Howard Hamlin brings Jimmy to court over the trademark infringement, in which he is ordered to have the advertisement removed.

After failing to convince any news outlets to cover his predicament as a human interest story, Jimmy organizes a video plea, calling for sympathy to his situation. During filming, however, the worker removing the advertisement slips and falls, held on only by his harness. Jimmy pulls the worker to safety while the public watches and records. It is revealed that the accident was staged by Jimmy as a publicity stunt. Howard and Kim, watching the news, see through the ruse instantly. Due to his newfound popularity, Jimmy receives numerous new consultations.

Jimmy visits Chuck, but hides the newspaper that reported the "rescue" to keep Chuck from seeing it. Chuck congratulates Jimmy on his new success, but is oblivious to the stunt. Chuck notices that one of his daily newspapers is missing, which Jimmy dismisses. After Jimmy leaves, a suspicious Chuck painstakingly hurries to his neighbor's house and collects their copy of the newspaper, in which Chuck reads about the stunt.

PLOT: While Tuco Salamanca is preparing salsa in his kitchen, his grandmother returns home followed by Cal and Lars. The twins, irate, begin to adamantly state the seriousness of the injury caused by the grandmother's hit and run. They begin to argue loudly and insult Tuco's grandmother, which agitates him. After sending her upstairs, Tuco reaches for a cane and violently knocks the twins unconscious. After arranging for someone to come over in a van, Tuco goes to the door and is greeted by Jimmy McGill. Tuco puts a gun to Jimmy's face and drags him inside.

Under interrogation, Jimmy insists that he did not target Tuco's grandmother. Jimmy attempts to barter with Tuco to save himself and the twins. Just as Tuco agrees to free them, one of the brothers immediately outs Jimmy's role in the scam. Enraged, Tuco takes Jimmy to the desert to question him further. When Tuco threatens to sever Jimmy's fingers with pruning shears, Jimmy desperately tries to claim that he is an FBI agent. After another threat from Tuco's lieutenant, Nacho, Jimmy admits that he is a lawyer who intended to scam Mr. and Mrs. Kettleman. Tuco frees Jimmy, but moves to kill Cal and Lars in revenge for insulting his grandmother. Jimmy manages to convince Tuco to spare their lives, and talks him into merely breaking one leg on each of the brothers to make an example of them.

After dropping off Cal and Lars at the hospital, Jimmy goes on a date with a woman in a bar. Jimmy, traumatized from witnessing Tuco's maiming of the twins, is distracted by a customer snapping breadsticks. Jimmy excuses himself and vomits in the bathroom. After an intoxicated Jimmy arrives at Chuck's house and collapses on his couch, Chuck - who claims to suffer from extreme electromagnetic hypersensitivity - throws Jimmy's cell phone into the yard. The following morning, Chuck confronts Jimmy after seeing the brothers' hospital bills. Jimmy reassures Chuck that he isn't going back to being "Slippin' Jimmy" - in other words, he is not scamming people on this occasion.

After several days in court, Jimmy returns to his office and sees that he still has no messages. However, one of the beauty salon employees tells him that a client has arrived. The client turns out to be Nacho, who tells Jimmy that he wants to take the $1.6 million stolen by the Kettlemans in exchange for a finder's fee. Jimmy insists that he is a lawyer, not a criminal. Nacho disregards this, and writes his number on one of Jimmy's matchbooks. He reminds Jimmy that if he tells anyone about their conversation, he will be killed. Nacho exits the nail salon as the episode ends.

RECEPTION:
Upon moving to its regular Monday slot, the episode received 3.4 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49. This equated to a 50 percent drop in viewers, along with a 52 percent decline in the demographic.

The episode received positive reviews from critics. Erik Kain of Forbes said that despite hating the long and drawn-out restaurant scene, the overall episode was good. Despite this he felt that he wasn't "sitting nearly as close to the edge of my seat [as in Breaking Bad]—but it’s entertaining and funny and still beautifully shot, acted, and written." David Segal of The New York Times, in a positive review, noted that his favourite part of the episode "is the elaborate, jaunty montage of Jimmy at court, which pays tribute to the elaborate, jaunty montage in Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz, complete with the same Vivaldi concerto and “It’s showtime!” catchphrase.
Catherine Gee of The Telegraph gave the episode 4 out of 5 stars, saying:'' We got to see Jimmy McGill... truly show off his negotiating skills when haggling over the twins’ fate. And it is in the deft hands of the episode’s writer and co-creator Peter Gould that we got to indulge in a light chuckle over whether McGill can talk Tuco down from a flaying to a leg-breaking while avoiding the possible detours of eye-gouging and tongue-ripping.''

Roth Cornet of IGN gave the episode a 9 out of 10, saying "Better Call Saul hit the ground running with its second episode; setting the stage for a series that is part morality play, part Greek tragedy (replete with a foregone and less than savory conclusion) and part love letter to great performers – whatever walk of life they happen to be on." Richard Vine of The Guardian was also positive in his view. In particular he felt that "The best thing to come out of the desert is our introduction to Nacho Varga. Tuco’s far more reasonable associate has sized up the situation and tracked Jimmy down to his office" - Wikipedia

PLOT: Jimmy and Chuck begin making preparations for their lawsuit against Sandpiper Crossing. Chuck warns Jimmy that their attorneys will attempt to file a restraining order to keep him out of their property, but Jimmy is confident he can prevail. At the courthouse, Jimmy prevents the restraining order from being filed. Upon returning to Chuck's house, he finds that Sandpiper Crossing's attorneys have sent numerous boxes of paperwork that they must file a response to in an effort to intimidate them. Chuck does not believe that he and Jimmy can handle the case alone and suggests that they refer the case to Hamlin Hamlin & McGill. Jimmy is reluctant to involve HHM, but eventually agrees and arranges a meeting. Later that night, while Jimmy is asleep, Chuck sneaks out of the house and uses Jimmy's phone to make a call.

The next morning, Jimmy and Chuck return to HHM, where Howard prepares for their arrival by confiscating everybody's phones and shutting down the building's electricity. The entire staff then greet Chuck's return with a standing ovation. Howard is confident that they have a strong case against Sandpiper Crossing and offers to give Jimmy twenty percent of the final settlement fees, as well as a of counsel fee of $20,000. However, he makes it clear that Jimmy will not be working on the case or with HHM. This angers Jimmy, who believes he is being left out and demands to know why he has repeatedly been excluded from the firm. When Howard does not answer his questions, Jimmy decides not to release the case to HHM. Kim confronts Howard about his refusal to allow Jimmy into the firm. Howard is at first resistant, but he decides to tell Kim the truth.

Meanwhile, Mike receives a job offer to be a bodyguard for Pryce, a first time drug dealer. Pryce drives Mike, who is in possession of the titular pimento cheese sandwich but no weapon, to an abandoned factory where he coaches Pryce on how to carry out an illegal drug sale. Nacho arrives and hands over a large sum of cash in exchange for drugs. When Pryce notes that the payment is actually short by twenty dollars, Mike steps in and calmly demands that Nacho pay in full. Nacho attempts to intimidate Mike, but ultimately pays when he realizes Mike cannot be cowed. As they leave, Mike tells Pryce that he has done research into Nacho and knows he has been organizing drug deals without his bosses' knowledge, and would not have risked a deal gone bad. Mike gives Pryce a warning about committing to the drug trade and informs him that he is officially a criminal and that there will be no going back.

Kim meets Jimmy and suggests that he take Howard's deal, which would give him enough money to start his own firm. After rejecting Kim's advice, Jimmy checks his phone. The next day, Jimmy informs Chuck that he will accept Howard's deal after all, having discovered that Chuck used his phone to call Howard before their meeting. He has now deduced it was Chuck, not Howard, who had been keeping him out of HHM all along. Chuck admits it is true, having known that Jimmy got his law degree from a diploma mill. Disappointed that Jimmy is not a "true" lawyer, Chuck felt that Jimmy could never be an associate for HHM, as he hasn't changed from his con man roots. Feeling betrayed, Jimmy angrily cuts his ties with Chuck.

PLOT: Two police officers arrive at Chuck McGill's house after his neighbor calls 911 to report the stolen newspaper. Chuck refuses to open the door for the police officers due to his electromagnetic hypersensitivity. One officer walks around to the basement door, where he finds that the breaker lines have been cut and several empty cans of camping fuel for Chuck's stove and lanterns. Combined with Chuck's ramblings, the two officers deduce that Chuck is a drug user, kick down the front door, and taser him.

Meanwhile, Jimmy approaches wealthy tycoon Big Ricky Sipes, who offers $1 million in cash to help him secede from the United States. Jimmy's excitement at the windfall quickly dissipates when he notices the eccentric mogul has printed his own currency, and Jimmy can't take a single "dollar" to the bank. Jimmy visits another prospective client, an inventor named Roland Jaycocks, who asks to help him patent "Tony the Toilet Buddy," a training toilet that spouts encouraging phrases to kids as they use it. When Jimmy points out that all of the phrases could be misconstrued as sexual innuendos, an incensed Roland chases Jimmy out of his house. Finally, Jimmy visits Mrs. Strauss, an elderly woman who collects porcelain Hummel figurines of which one is an alpine shepherd boy. He assists her with estate planning, which mostly consists of allocating various Hummels to different friends and relatives. Mrs. Strauss finds Jimmy's moxie quite charming, and pays his full fee upfront.

That evening, Jimmy entertains Kim Wexler with tales of his eventful day. Now that he has two wills and a living trust under his belt, she suggests that he could have a promising future in elder law. Jimmy considers, but is interrupted when Kim takes a call from Hamlin saying that Chuck is in the hospital. There, Jimmy and Kim explain Chuck's condition to a skeptical doctor who proves that Chuck's electromagnetic hypersensitivity may not be genuine. She recommends Chuck be committed to a mental institution, but Jimmy initially decides to take him home. However, Hamlin shows up and tells Jimmy that he has convinced the DA to make sure that Chuck is not committed. Jimmy is infuriated by Hamlin's greed, knowing that if Chuck were to be committed, Jimmy would become his legal guardian and thus have the authority to request and receive Chuck's severance payment from Hamlin's firm. Although he threatens to have Chuck committed just to scare Hamlin, he still ultimately decides to take him home.

At Chuck's house, the two brothers discuss Jimmy's recent exploits, and Chuck encourages him to pursue elder law. After mimicking Andy Griffith's appearance in Matlock, Jimmy promotes his new specialization at a nursing home by printing a slogan on the bottom of Jello containers: "Need a will? Call McGill." Exiting the parking lot, Jimmy gives Mike his business card that has the same slogan printed on it. After his shift, Mike parks outside a woman's house; she comes out and gets in her car, stares at Mike uncomfortably, and they both drive away. At his home, Mike is visited by several police officers. He tells the detective, "Long way from home, aren't you?", to which the detective replies, "You and me both."

PLOT: Sometime in the past, a young Jimmy works as a mail clerk for Hamlin Hamlin & McGill. One day, he receives notice that he has passed the state bar exam. He reports the good news to Chuck, expecting to be hired by the firm as an attorney. Chuck hesitantly replies that the hiring must first be cleared by the partners. During an office celebration, Howard Hamlin tells Jimmy that the firm will not be hiring him immediately, coldly suggesting he re-examine his application in six months.

In the present, Jimmy grows suspicious when a client mentions that her nursing home, Sandpiper Crossing, controls her pension and Social Security by giving her a $500 monthly allowance, deducting fees, and putting the rest of the money in savings. Upon receiving her invoices, Jimmy's suspicions grow and he begins collecting invoices from other residents. Jimmy returns to Chuck's house to analyze the invoices and they find evidence of Sandpiper Crossing systematically overcharging its residents, making them guilty of fraud and forming grounds for a class action lawsuit. Chuck suggests that Jimmy should look for more evidence.

Jimmy is turned away at the front desk at Sandpiper Crossing. However, Jimmy can hear documents being shredded and hastily writes a demand letter in the bathroom. After being removed by security, he resorts to rummaging through the living home's dumpster in an effort to find shredded documents. Upon finding some in a recycling bin, he begins to sort through them at Chuck's house. Chuck helps out Jimmy and manages to recover an incriminating document. With a solid case against Sandpiper Crossing, Chuck decides to become Jimmy's co-counsel and assist him in the case. They then contact Sandpiper Crossing's attorneys with their evidence and they agree to meet.

Meanwhile, Mike goes to babysit his granddaughter for the day. When Stacey returns from work, she asks Mike what to do with the bribe money Matty had stashed away. Mike tells her that she should use it for herself and her daughter, so that some good can come from the dirty money. Stacey thanks Mike, but notes that even with the bribe money, it is not enough to cover her expenses. Troubled by this, Mike returns to the vet who had treated his bullet wound in "Five-O" and asks him if there is any "work" available.

Sandpiper Crossing's attorneys deny that the home is defrauding its residents, but concede that some of them were overcharged and are willing to compensate them for a total of $100,000. However, Jimmy presents evidence of Sandpiper Crossing engaging in illicit interstate commerce, making them eligible for a RICO lawsuit. Chuck demands that Sandpiper Crossing pay $20 million in settlement fees, which the attorneys refuse. As they make preparations for a court case, an exhausted Jimmy leaves some paperwork in his car. Preoccupied with his preparation, Chuck casually leaves his house to retrieve the paperwork. As a stunned Jimmy follows him, Chuck suddenly realizes what happened and drops the paperwork as they stare at each other in shock.

PLOT: In a flashback, young Jimmy, after being arrested and then released with Chuck's help, goes to the local bar in his hometown of Cicero, Illinois to say goodbye to Marco, his friend and partner in crime who pulled off cons on unsuspecting people. Jimmy decides to move to Albuquerque to live an honest life and gives up his cons, which disappoints Marco.

In the "present", Jimmy returns to HHM, where he goes through with the deal and hands over the case to them, revealing that he figured out Chuck's involvement. Howard apologizes to Jimmy for being hostile and gives Jimmy his of counsel fee of $20,000. Jimmy also requests Howard take over buying Chuck's groceries and daily newspapers. Howard is duly impressed with the amount of care Jimmy had shown to Chuck over the past year. Afterwards, Jimmy returns to the retirement home, where he hosts a game of bingo for the residents. After an improbable string of letter "B's" are drawn, he suffers a nervous breakdown in the midst of the game, and rants to the residents how he had taken revenge against a man named Chet, who owed him money and cheated with his wife, by defecating through the sunroof of his car. However, Chet's children were present in the backseat. Since Chet had connections, he had the District Attorney file charges for indecent exposure, which could get Jimmy tried as a sex offender. Fortunately, Chuck managed to have the charges dropped, but Jimmy attributes that one event for his current situation. He quits hosting the bingo game midstream and storms out of the retirement home.

Afterwards, Jimmy decides to take a vacation to his hometown of Cicero, Illinois. In Cicero, Jimmy enters a bar and reunites with Marco. After reminiscing and catching-up, they almost immediately run a spurious "rare, JFK half-dollar" scam on an unsuspecting businessman. Jimmy and Marco then spend the rest of the week running more cons. At the end of the week, Jimmy wakes up to find multiple messages from his elderly clients asking where he is. Jimmy explains to Marco that he is a budding elder law attorney, and that he must return to Albuquerque to see to his clients. Marco is envious that Jimmy has a legitimate career, pointing out how he himself has nothing to live for other than his cons. Marco convinces Jimmy to stay for one last fake Rolex con, which Jimmy reluctantly agrees. However, during the con, Marco suffers a heart attack and collapses. Jimmy rushes to his aid, his last words being "I screwed-up. Jimmy, you know what, this was the greatest week of my life". At Marco's funeral, Jimmy inherits Marco's pinky ring.

Before returning to Albuquerque, Jimmy is called by Kim. The Sandpiper case has grown too big for even HHM to handle, requiring them to partner with Davis & Mane, a law firm in Santa Fe. D&M is interested in hiring Jimmy and placing him on a partner-track because his clients like him. In addition, Chuck cannot block the decision since D&M is a separate firm. Jimmy drives to the courthouse to meet his new prospective employer, but upon arriving in the parking lot of the courthouse, he looks at Marco's pinky ring and turns the car around to leave. Upon stopping his car at the parking lot gate attended by Mike, Jimmy asks him why they didn't take the $1.6 million they took from the Kettlemans. Mike recalls that Jimmy didn't take the money because he wanted to do the "right thing", while Mike himself did not take the money because he was "hired to do a job and he did it". Jimmy then assures Mike that he will not make the same mistake again, and drives off while humming "Smoke on the Water", the same song Marco was humming just before his fatal collapse.

The site's consensus reads, "The investment into Better Call Saul's first season pays off with a finale that is at once comic and tragic, as Jimmy's conversion to Saul nears completion."

Roth Cornet of IGN gave the episode a 9.0 rating, concluding, "Better Call Saul gave us an exemplary first season of television. The finale brought us to the moment where Jimmy made the decision to abandon his attempt to walk a righteous path and, instead, give over to his baser drives and desires. A more open-ended conclusion may have felt more emotionally impactful. On the whole, though, this was a gorgeously designed and executed episode; one that leaves enough room for – what we hope will be - an equally extraordinary second season." The Telegraph rated the episode 4 out of 5 stars.
